Having a pet requires free time and commitment. If you often find yourself traveling, or just being away from home due to work during the day, I’m sure you get worried about your pet. It can be such a hassle getting a pet sitter, and there will always be that pang of doubt, a voice in your head wondering if something has gone catastrophically wrong in your absence. Well, you don’t have to feel that way anymore, thanks to the wonders of modern technology called the automatic pet feeder.

An automatic pet feeder serves to feed your pet when you’re away (or just sleeping) and you can choose between electronic and gravity feeders. Their main difference is the power source. Gravity feeders don’t need any power source because they use gravity to dispense food whenever the food in the bowl starts running out. But electronic feeders are a different story because they are programmed to dispense a certain amount of food without your intervention.

Now, if you really want to get with the times, or if you can’t imagine going a day without your computer or smartphone, there’s a type of electronic feeders that will be perfect for you — an automatic pet feeder with Wifi. They are often called smart pet feeders because you use your smartphone to set the feeding schedule. You can even choose the cat feeder with camera or dog feeder.

Best WiFi Automatic Pet Feeders

PetSafe Smart Feed Automatic Pet Feeder

The first Wifi pet food dispenser is made by PetSafe and since it is a WiFi feeder, it requires a 2.4 GHz wireless router. If you want to control it with your smartphone you have to download an app. You can use it with iPhone, iPod or Android smartphones which is great because it is not strictly tied to the smartphone brand. With this app, you can set your pet’s meals no matter where you are and what you are doing. You can set up to 12 meals a day, which sounds like too much, but it is a great option for households with more than one pet. You can also adjust the size of the portion (1/8 cup-4 cups), so whatever your pet’s feeding needs may be, this feeder’s got you covered.

PetSafe Smart Feed Automatic Dog and Cat Feeder

This automatic pet feeder Wifi has a variety of interesting features. For example, if you want to feed your pet a snack that’s outside its scheduled feeding times, you can use the Feed Now feature. The option that I personally like the best is the Slow Feed option, which dispenses the food slowly for 15 minutes. This is great for those pets that eat too fast and get sick or bloated as a result.

PetSafe Smart Feed Automatic Dog and Cat Feeder review

This smart feeder uses a power cord but if your pet likes to play with cords, you can replace them with 4 batteries (aren’t included). The best part about this feeder is that it will continue to work on a schedule if the Wifi is down, which can really happen from time to time. The entire feeder is made of BPA-free plastic in a combination with stainless steel, and both of the materials aren’t harmful to pets. You don’t have to worry about cleaning the feeder since every removable part of the feeder is dishwasher safe. Easiest clean up ever!

PetKit Smart Feeder 2nd Generation

This feeder also requires a wireless router 2.4GHz. It uses a PetKit app that you can download to a compatible smartphone —iOS 9.0+ or Android OS 4.0+. This smart feeder really lives up to its title, as it tries to do most of the work for you. For example, you can use the PetKit app to put in your pet’s breed, age, weight, and activity level, and the app will recommend personalized meal portions. Really useful if your pet doesn’t have any special feeding needs. Unfortunately, the product doesn’t come with any kind of manual, but you can use their phone support if you need help. The metal bowl can hold up to 2.5 cups of dry food, and it’s dishwasher safe.

The feeder works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, which is a nifty little feature for those who like to use voice commands. It is not an automatic pet feeder with camera, but it is compatible with Nest Cam security camera, so you can even view snapshots of your pet eating (and ensuring that the feeder is working properly). The pet feeder will also notify you when your pet has eaten and how much food is left.

The automatic feeder has a built-in rechargeable backup battery, with up to two days of battery life. It doesn’t have the power adapter option, but with a rechargeable battery, it doesn’t even need it. The purchase of this product will also get you a free trial of PetKit’s Smart Delivery. Smart Delivery delivers your pet’s food based on how much they should eat each day.

Pros:

  • It helps you personalize your pet’s portions.
  • It has rechargeable battery backup.

Cons:

  • It doesn’t come with a manual.
  • It is not an automatic cat/dog feeder with camera

Petzi Treat Cam

This automatic dog feeder with camera can only be used to dispense treats, not full meals. Still, I found it to be a very useful and fun product so I decided to include it on this list. To use it, you’ll once again need to download the free Petzi app to your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. The treats are held in an airtight container with a snap-on lid, for keeping the food fresh and pests out.

Petzi Treat Cam

This pet camera treat dispenser is perfect for pets that have separation anxiety, as you can use it to say hello to your pet through high-quality audio. This Wifi pet treat dispenser also allows you to see your pet, although you won’t be able to hear them. You can also use the camera to take pictures of your pet. The pets don’t know the camera is there, which is great for taking photos. Petzi even made their own social network for sharing these photos. You can use it, or just post the photos on your favorite social networks.

Petzi Treat Cam review

The biggest complaint I have about this remote treat camera for pets is that the audio doesn’t work both ways and that it doesn’t come with any kind of bowl. The treats sort of just fly out of this pet camera that gives treats, which may be fun for your pet, but it will inevitably make a mess on your floor.

Pros:

  • It has both a camera and audio.
  • You can use a smartphone app to control it.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t come with a bowl.
  • Audio works only one way.

WOpet Timer Programmable Smart Feeder

Here we have another automatic pet feeder with camera. This feeder also requires a 2.4GHz WiFi signal to work and you can connect it to your  Android or Apple device. The only thing you have to do before connecting it is to download the app. You can do that by searching the app in the App Store or the Google Play store, or you can simply scan the QR code in the user manual. The interesting thing is that you can connect 4 WOpet feeders to the app, but I am not sure if you want to have 4 feeders in your home, that is up to you.

WOpet Timer Programmable Smart Feeder

You can make it work with batteries or a power cord, but keep in mind that if you use only batteries, you won’t be able to use the camera integrated into the automatic feeder. I recommend you to have the batteries ready if it comes to a power outage. The feeder’s storage capacity is 20 cups, and the serving tray’s size makes it the best fit for a single pet. It should be used only with dry food.

WOpet Timer Programmable Smart Feeder review

The camera is HD and great quality, and you can use it to see what your pet is doing when you aren’t around. You can also hear and speak to your pet, and even record videos with sound. It is a good idea to record your (or someone else’s) voice and use it call your pet to eat, which is guaranteed to make your pet overjoyed and less lonely. The sound and the video quality on the pet feeder are good.

SailnovoSmart Pet Feeder

The last automatic pet feeder on my list is another app-controlled smart feeder. Again, it uses a 2.4 GHz WiFi network. You can set it for up to four meals a day, and 20 portions per meal. Each portion is approximately 15 g. This makes the portions really flexible, and the wifi pet feeder suitable for pets who have weight problems.

SailnovoSmart Pet Feeder

The hopper holds up to 6 liters of food, which is really a lot. It will be an ideal choice for you if you have multiple cats (more than 3), or a big dog that eats a lot. If not, the food might go stale inside the cat feeder with camera before your pets have the time to eat it, although you don’t have to worry about pests because the hopper is sealed. The food tray is detachable for easy cleaning by hand, and made of food-grade ABS plastic.

SailnovoSmart Pet Feeder review

The feeder has a built-in voice recorder and speaker, so you can record a message that lasts 10 seconds, and it will play those short messages when your pet comes for its scheduled meals. There is a similar model with the camera, but it is currently off the market.

Pros:

  • It has flexible portions.
  • Great for multiple pets.

Cons:

  • It’s not suited for a single smaller pet because the food could go stale.

If you are looking for an automatic dog feeder, I would recommend the SailnovoSmart Pet Feeder because it has a big food container.
