Did you know that an adult cat on a dry food diet requires about a cup of water a day? Cats require hydration, just as we do, in order to keep their organs healthy, to digest food properly, and to flush waste products out of their bodies. But keeping our cats well-hydrated can prove to be more challenging than one might think. Of course, you own a cat water bowl, but maybe it’s not a good fit for your cat at all, without you even being aware of it.
Cats can be picky, and they have different preferences. Many cats suffer from whisker stress, for example. This condition causes pain in cats’ sensitive whiskers, which makes them really hate narrow bowls because the sides touch their whiskers while they’re drinking. Other cats prefer running water, because they associate still water with contamination.
Your schedule and lifestyle can also impact the choice of a cat water dish. If you’re away during the day due to work, or if you travel often, you can’t just leave the water in the bowl for your cat, because that water will go stale. It’s the same story with the food and that is why people use automatic cat feeders.
How To Stop Cat From Spilling Water Bowl?
If your cat plays or puts toys in water bowl, the best solution is to find a cat water fountain that is designed to prevent that particular behavior. Those cat drinking fountains are mostly covered with some ornament or are very shallow for that particular reason. You can read all about them in cat water fountain reviews below.
Best Cat Water Bowl And Fountain Models
As I said, cats have different preferences for their water bowls, which also means that there’s a really wide range of different options on the market. It can be hard finding the one that will be the best fit for you and your cat(s). That’s why I have put together this list of top five cat water dishes.
Necoichi Raised Cat Water Bowl
Many cat owners aren’t aware that raising the bowl from the ground is much healthier than the bowl being at floor level. It puts less strain on your cat’s neck, hips, shoulders and joints, which is especially helpful for older cats. It also significantly lowers the risk of bloating and vomiting after eating.
This cat water dispenser is specifically designed for cats, which means it will be the perfect height. It can hold about 1.5 cups of water, which is quite enough. The inside of the cat water bowl has measuring lines, so you always know just how much water your cat drank. This is important because drinking too little or too much of water can be an early sign of an illness or infection. The bowl is made of high quality, FDA standard porcelain, which makes it dishwasher and even microwave safe. Porcelain is a great material for pet bowls, but the only downside is that they can break, unlike plastic or stainless steel bowls.
This no-spill cat water bowl has edges designed to prevent the water spilling out, which is great if you have a cat that is a messy drinker. The ceramic cat fountain comes in 6 seriously cute visual designs. I can’t choose my favorite, they all honestly look great. Each design has a picture at the bottom of the bowl, to help your cat assess the water level.
- A raised bowl has health benefits.
- This cat food and water bowl is easy to clean and very cute.
- It’s porcelain, so it can break.
Cat Mate Fresh Water Drinking Fountain
The next cat drinking water fountain on my list comes from Cat Mate, a big name on the pet products market. The Cat Mate water fountain has a special design that allows your cat to drink from different levels. It is mostly made for cats, but a small-sized dog can also drink from it without trouble.
This automatic water bowl for cats comes with a 100 Fl Oz water capacity. There are even max and min level indicators so you can see how much water your pet has. You will get a notification when the water is too low so you can refill. The water in the fountain is clean and fresh thanks to the 3 stage filtration inside the bowl. The recommendation is to replace the filter cartridge once a month so the entire system can work with the best results.
The pump system is very quiet so you can be sure that your cat won’t get scared during drinking. When you want to clean the cat water bowl fountain, you can easily remove the filter, put the bowl in the dishwasher (it is dishwasher-safe) and clean it. Once it is cleaned you can easily put the filter back in the bowl and refill the water for your cat.
- It provides fresh water at all times.
- It’s easy to clean.
- Your pet can move it.
Catit Cat Flower Water Fountain
This automatic water fountain was designed by Catit, a brand that has creative products designed specifically for cats. Fresh water continuously flows out thanks to the small water pump, so this fountain will be a great fit for cats that prefer to drink running water.
The water reservoir can hold up to three liters of water. The flower fountain’s design allows for three different water flow settings, making it flexible for picky cats. You change the settings by adding the flower accessory that consists of petals and a yellow flower cap. Inserting the flower accessory creates long, faucet-like streams of water. Adding the flower cap will tone down the bubbling water on top. Without the flower, the water turns into a gently flowing surface.
This pet fountains for cats features the water softening Catit Triple Action filter, which removes magnesium and calcium from tap water. If these minerals accumulate in your pet’s urinary tract, they can lead to infections and diseases. The Catit water fountain filters also remove chlorine, bacteria, and stray hairs. One cat water fountain filter will work for about 30 days. To clean the fountain, you’ll need to hand-wash each part with natural soap. The only downside of this water fountain is that the water pump can get really noisy when the water runs low. To prevent this, clean the pump regularly and refill the fountain with water.
The fountain is made of pet-friendly plastic. Additionally, the surface is whisker-stress-free. I explained what whisker stress is at the beginning, and if you think your cat might suffer from this condition, it is of the utmost importance to buy a water bowl that the cat can drink out of without feeling pain. The added benefit of this waterer is that it looks really cute!
- It comes with a water filter.
- The surface is whiskers stress-free.
- The water pump can get loud.
Petmate Replendish Gravity Waterer w/Microban
Here we have a gravity waterer. It comes in 4 sizes: 0.5 gallon, 1 gallon, 2.5 gallon and 4 gallon. That’s because dogs can also use this waterer. If you have only cats, 0.5 gallon or 1 gallon should be enough, even for multiple cats.
The waterer features Microban Antimicrobial Product Protection, which prevents the buildup of stain and odor-causing bacteria in the water bottle. It also comes with an included charcoal filter that prolongs the time before refills are needed. Additional cat fountain filters can be purchased separately. You can also use it without a filter if you want to, but you will need to change the water more often in that case. When you need to refill and clean the water bowl, just unscrew it, wipe it clean by hand, and refill it with water. One problem that this gravity feeder and waterer has is that it can be hard to refill without spraying water everywhere. This is especially the case with the 4 gallon one, as it’s really heavy once you fill it with water.
What’s great about this waterer is that it can be used outdoors and indoors. If you have a back yard and outdoor cats, they can play outside and drink water when they get thirsty from running around. The product comes in a wide selection of different colors. The bottle is made of BPA-free plastic and it can be the cat food and water dispenser.
- It comes with a charcoal filter and Microban protection.
- It can be hard to refill it, especially with the larger water bottles.
PetSafe Drinkwell Cat Water Fountain
The last on the list is another cat waterer by PetSafe. This one isn’t a gravity waterer, but an automatic water fountain. It’s powered by electricity, so you’ll need to plug it into your wall socket. It has a water pump that enables a free-falling stream of water. The flow rate of the water can easily be adjusted to your cat’s preferences. It only comes in one size that holds 168 oz. of water. If you’re only going to be using it for your cats, this size should be just fine for you, so this isn’t really a downside.
The cat water dish is made of BPA-free plastic. It comes with a replaceable carbon filter that keeps water fresh and removes bad tastes and smells. Still, you will need to disassemble the fountain pump and clean it thoroughly every two weeks. Don’t worry, PetSafe has provided detailed instructions on how to clean the pump. You also have to replace the filter regularly. Overall, cleaning this water fountain is a bit of a chore. The inside has many nooks and crannies that all need to be cleaned and disinfected every once in a while if you want your product to last. Also, the cat water bowl doesn’t really have high edges or any sort of spill catcher, so some water will definitely end up on your floor.
There are also a number of additional compatible products that you can purchase separately for this Drinkwell automatic cat water fountain, such as a replacement pump, a cleaning kit, a replacement carbon filter, and more.
- It comes with a carbon filter.
- The water flow can be adjusted.
- Cleaning it can be bothersome
- Cats will sometimes splash the water onto your floor
Conclusion: Best Cat Water Fountain
In my opinion, the best cat drinking fountain is the Catit water fountain because it has more features than other water bowls, it is elevated waterer and you can change the stream of water.
