PetSafe is the largest manufacturer of electronic pet training products in the U.S., and it’s been on the market since 1991. That doesn’t mean the brand is only popular in the U.S., though. They have expanded internationally, and their products are sold in 52 countries. They take great pride in hiring people that are both pet lovers and professionals, including top trainers, veterinarians, and behaviorists.
If you’re looking for a company that really cares about animals and isn’t just trying to part you from your money, PetSafe seems to be one — every year, they donate a total of $225,000 to build new off-leash dog parks or upgrade existing ones.
PetSafe sells a wide range of products that aim to make any pet owner’s life easier. This includes pet fences, bark control solutions, remote training products, pet fountains and feeders, pet doors and barriers, interactive toys, pet potty solutions, and leashes and harnesses.
In this particular PetSafe feeder review, I would like to write about their automatic pet feeders. As the name would suggest, automatic pet feeders automatically dispense pet food from a plastic container called the hopper to a feeding bowl. They are a great way to keep your pet fed and happy when you are not around, and they can also help set up a consistent feeding routine and keep your pet’s weight in check.
I want to share with you the best and the most popular PetSafe food dispensers when it comes to automatic feeders and the best way to do that is to make a review. That is why below you can find detailed reviews of great PetSafe automatic pet feeder models.
PetSafe Automatic Pet Feeder Reviews
PetSafe Two Meal Automatic Pet Feeder
This PetSafe automatic pet feeder is quite small (11.9 x 2.5 x 8.9 inches), with only two food compartments that hold 1.5 cups of dry or semi-moist food each. This makes it a great choice for you if you have two pets, or if you wish to schedule two meals for your single pet. Its small size means that it will easily fit anywhere in your home. It also makes it easily portable, so this is the perfect product for pet parents who love to travel and take their pets along.
This feeder is special in that it doesn’t have a hopper. Instead, you use an LCD display with a digital timer that you set by how many hours until you want the lids on the food compartments to open.
So, if your pets keep waking you up at 5 am barking and/or meowing for food, just set the timer before you go to bed and get a guilt-free good night’s rest. Unfortunately, while this process of setting up the timer isn’t complicated, it needs to be repeated every day.
The locking lids on the two food compartments keep food fresh, and they are made of sturdy material that ensures your pet isn’t able to break in. The two removable trays are dishwasher safe and made of BPA-free plastic. Once again, this feeder is best suited for cats and smaller dogs. This feeder also doesn’t come with a power cable, which is pretty rude from PetSafe.
Easily portable and fits anywhere in your home.
User-friendly and easy to clean.
The timer needs to be set every time you wish to use the feeder.
Doesn’t have a power adapter.
PetSafe 5-Meal Automatic Pet Feeder
This PetSafe feeder measures 15 x 5 x 18 inches and it consists of five one-cup portion sections. Similar to the PetSafe 2-meal feeder, it doesn’t have a hopper. You need to fill the feeder trays with dry food and set the times, and the feeder will rotate to the next tray at the scheduled times. You can set up to five feeding times and in my opinion, this is a better PetSafe cat feeder then dog feeder.
This makes it very flexible and you can experiment with different combinations that will best suit you and your pet’s needs. It is best suited for cats and smaller dogs, especially because bigger dogs might be able to break it trying to get to the food before scheduled times. The food tray does have a lid, but it is not an airtight container which may cause problems.
The food can become stale if you keep it in there for too long, or it might attract pests, but you can prevent that by replacing the food regularly and being careful. Due to this reason, it is best to use it with dry food only.
The good news is that both the lid and the tray are made of plastic which is safe for pets, and the tray is dishwasher-safe. While the product does come with programming instructions, it might take some time to figure it out if you aren’t very comfortable with technology, so it’s not as user-friendly as some of the other PetSafe automatic pet feeders that I’ve written about. The feeder uses 4 D-cell batteries (only) but you have to buy them separately.
Very flexible, allowing for different combinations of food flavors and feeding times.
Easy to clean.
Doesn’t have a power adapter.
It can be a bit difficult to program.
PetSafe Eatwell Automatic Pet Feeder
This product is similar to the PetSafe 2Meal pet feeder, but it’s even smaller, measuring only approximately 10 x 8 x 3.5 inches. Naturally, it has the same good sides as the Digital Two Meal Feeder — it will fit anywhere and it is easily portable.
In addition, the 2-Meal Automatic Pet Feeder has the added benefit of being even more user-friendly. You just need to put in a single AA battery (not included), fill the two trays with food, close the lids and set the PetSafe timed feeder like on the old kitchen timer. It is one of the simplest product in their offer! Absolutely no technical knowledge is required to use this PetSafe cat feeder. Even the fact that you will need to set the timers every time doesn’t pose a problem, as it is very quick and simple to do.
The best thing is that each tray can be set up separately and you can do that 2 days in the future. It is very simple and the best way to do that is to set the first container to open up after 24 hours and the second one after 48 hours. That means you can leave for two days and your pet will have fresh food so you don’t have to worry about them being hungry.
However, it is once again only suited for cats and smaller sized dogs. Bigger animals might be able to break the lids, and even some smarter cats might figure out how to pull the trays out before scheduled feeding time. Both food trays dishwasher-safe, but you have to remove them from the feeder before putting in the dishwasher.
Extremely quick and simple to set up.
It is compact and easily portable.
It doesn’t have a power adapter.
PetSafe Healthy Pet Feeder
This PetSafe food dispenser is the only gravity feeder they’re selling at the moment. The PetSafe gravity feeder system, as I’ve already explained, refills your pet’s bowl whenever the food is running low, which ensures that your pets will have access to fresh food whenever their little hearts desire, even when you’re not around.
This also means that there’s no setup required, as well as no technical knowledge. All you need to do is fill the hopper by screwing the cap off and adding the food, and the feeder will do the rest of the job for you. When the hopper empties, just repeat the same process to refill it.
However, keep in mind that this also means you can’t portion your pet’s meals. If your pet needs to diet, eats too fast, or has medical problems, this is not the feeder for you. The feeder comes in two sizes: small, that can hold 2 pounds of dry food, and medium, which holds 4 pounds of dry food. This means that this feeder is suitable for cats and dogs of any size.
Owners of large dog breeds, rejoice! It also works great if you have multiple pets, just make sure you don’t have an aggressive, dominant pet that would keep your other pets from accessing the feeder. The hopper locks in place so that your pets can’t knock it over trying to get more food. The PetSafe feeder stainless bowl is removable, and it can be cleaned in the dishwasher. The rest of the feeder can easily be cleaned by hand.
Adjustable for almost every type of cat and dog.
Extremely simple to use.
Not suited for pets with special feeding needs due to medical problems, obesity, or eating too fast.
PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed™ Automatic Pet Feeder
This PetSafe food dispenser will be best suited for you if you have pets with different feeding requirements, but you don’t want to use a smartphone to schedule meals. So, if your cat is starting to look a bit like a certain cartoon cat that loves lasagna, this PetSafe electronic pet feeder will help you get your cat’s weight under control with its flexible meal portions and Slow Feed Mode.
The Slow Feed option dispenses meals slowly over 15 minutes. That way your pet can’t eat too fast or even overeat. Also, you can change the size of the portions if you see that your pet is getting more “fluffy” than usual. But if your pets aren’t satisfied with their portion, Immediate Feed Mode allows you to give then the next scheduled meal at that moment.
The size of the feeder suggests it is a better choice for cats or small to medium sized dogs and you can also use it if you are more cats (or dogs) in your home. The feeder works with most dry and semi-moist pet foods, and the stainless steel bowl can be washed in the dishwasher. Talk about a time saver!
The main problem with this feeder is that it doesn’t come with the PetSafe healthy pet simply feed power adapter, you have to buy it separately. The same story is with the batteries you can also use in the feeder. The feeder’s dimensions are 18.5 x 8.7 x 12.4 inches.
User friendly, also easy to set up, use, and clean.
Great for pets with medical or weight issues.
Batteries not included, power adapter sold separately.
Smart Feed Automatic Pet Feeder for iPhone and Android
The first PetSafe food dispenser I’d like to talk about is the PetSafe electronic pet feeder that is perhaps best suited for younger and more tech-savvy pet parents. That’s because this PetSafe automatic feeder connects to your router via Wi-Fi and uses a free SmartFeed app on your iPhone or Android smartphone to dispense food. This allows you to control your pet’s meals even if you aren’t at home.
You can use the app set the time for 12 meals a day, as well as customize portions. But if you think your pet has deserved an unscheduled snack, you can use the Feed Now option to feed your pet outside normal feeding times. The Slow Feed option dispenses meals slowly over 15 minutes, in order to stop your pet from eating too fast, so as to prevent vomiting or bloating. The feeder dispenses most dry and semi-moist pet foods, but it cannot be used with wet food.
The very important part about this feeder is that it will continue to work even if it loses its Wi-Fi connection and will continue to dispense any scheduled meals because it comes with both a power adapter and a backup battery.
The bowl itself is made out of stainless steel, and the hopper is made out of BPA-free plastic, which is better for your pet’s health. What’s more, the hopper, the lid, bowl, and bowl holder can all be washed in the dishwasher, allowing for a simple and easy cleanup. It measures 9.4” W x 20.3” L x 12.6” H and it is best suited for cats or smaller dogs.
It can be used from anywhere.
Has a power adapter option, and battery backup ensures your pet won’t miss a scheduled meal even in the case of a power outage.
Easy to clean.
Requires a wireless router 2.4GHz and some technical knowledge.
PetSafe Automatic Cat and Dog Feeder With Six Meal
This PetSafe electronic feeder has six slots in the hopper that can be filled with a desired, pre-portioned amount of food — up to one cup of dry dog or cat food. This makes it smaller than other PetSafe feeder dispensers, but it also makes it compact and portable. However, you can also choose not to take it with you and your pets when you take a trip because it has a convenient Sleep Mode that lets you stop the feeder without losing scheduled meals.
The feeder has a built-in digital clock and LCD display that are simple to use, making it really user-friendly. It also displays battery status, so that you can be sure the batteries won’t die while you’re away. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a PetSafe power adapter, and the required 4D alkaline batteries are not included.
The hopper has a clear lid, which makes it easy to check how many portions you have left, and the removable bowl and tray carousel are dishwasher safe. Just like the previous two feeders, this one is best suited for cats and smaller dogs. The product’s dimensions are 15.7 x 9.6 x 6.4 inches and the bowl holds only one cup of food, so it may not be the best choice if you have multiple pets.
Compact and portable
User-friendly and easy to clean
Doesn’t have a power adapter
PetSafe Automatic Feeder Instruction Manual
Most PetSafe automatic feeders need instructions because they are a complex product, but if you read the PetSafe automatic feeder manual, you won’t have trouble with them. You will get them with each PetSafe electronic pet feeder, but if you lost it or you didn’t get one by accident, you don’t have to worry because there are digital versions. Here you can see every instruction manual including the PetSafe 12-meal feeder instruction manual, PetSafe 5-meal and 2-meal automatic pet feeder instructions, and PetSafe healthy pet simply feed automatic feeder manual.
Conclusion: PetSafe Automatic Pet Feeder
As you can see, the PetSafe electronic pet feeder offer is big, but I would recommend the PetSafe healthy pet simply feed automatic feeder because it comes with more features and possibilities than other models in their offer. But, the problem is that most feeders are automatic feeders for cats, so if you are looking for automatic feeders for dogs, check out my post here. Also, if you are looking for wet cat food dispenser, read my post right here. On the other hand, if you need a water bowl for your pet, read my post about automatic pet waterers.
